Late last year while I was emptying the bins at the restaurant where I work I had this big revelation of my new nickname/pseudonym: RAZORSEX! I liked how it was kinda tough but also kinda smoothly sexy, the ultimate in Footscray style nicknames. My mum hated it, my friends loved it and eventually I came to the conclusion that Razorsex needed to send a big message to the Footscray community of which I’ve come to love. So Kahli and I bounced a few ideas back and forth and spoke to our wonderful friends at Trocadero Artspace.
Thanks to Max Buchanan taking the photo of me standing in front of the billboard laughing at him almost being hit by a car.
It’s on display until the end of April on the corner of Hopkins and Leeds St in Footscray shining down upon all who dare to walk out of Footscray Market. A totally genuine message of friendship to all without trying to advertise anything or profit. Plus I think it’s hilarious. Thanks very much to our translators and Aussie Signs for helping us out for cheap. SPECIAL THANKS TO TROCADERO ARTSPACE <3<3
If you have a blog or do some press elsewhere and want to write about it, here is a cheesy press release:
RAZORSEX PRESS
Kahli and Benjamin CAUGHTSHIP, two of Australia’s most industrially minded conceptual artists have curbed their violent edges to send a gigantic message of friendship to the wonderful people of Footscray.
Overlooking the busy corner of Hopkins and Leeds, the billboard is a smiling photograph of Benjamin’s alter ego, Razorsex alongside the sentence: “I will always be your friend” translated into a number of different languages.
“Well I don’t always have the social skills to just go up and make friends with people and it’s doubly hard when there is a language barrier but still I wanted to reach out to the community somehow, let everyone know how cool I think they are. So Kahli and I just asked ourselves what a wicked cool, crime solving, Renaissance man like Razorsex would do and hiring a massive highly visible billboard was our answer.”
Asked how such young artists could afford to rent and print their very own billboard in such a prime location they replied: “Let’s just say we’ve been washing a whole bunch of dishes!”
Razorsex Reaches the Community will be on display until the end of April thanks to the nurturing and welcoming support of the TROCADERO ARTSPACE artist run initiative.
